Real-life paintings by Alexa Meade

by painting directly onto her subjects and photographing them in a variety of constructed and real-world environments, artist alexa meade conflates the worlds of painting, photography, and performance 'transit', 18x24" limited edition chromogenic print all images © alexa meade

american artist alexa meade creates her representational paintings directly on her subjects, covering people and objects in layers of acrylic paint before photographing them. the works offer an unusual conflation of painting, installation, and photography, as the three-dimensional forms are collapsed in space, taking on a 2D appearance in the prints. In her exhibitions, meade frequently paints over small rooms in which a human subject sits for the duration of the show, offering a performative aspect to her work.

These paintings blew my mind. Do yourself a favor and see the rest of the images. The concept and execution of this is just brilliant.

Paintings by Amy Casey

Inspired by natural and unnatural disasters, personal fiascos and the never-ending stream of bad news coming in from the media, the world inside my paintings has been turned (sometimes literally) upside down. The ground has crumbled underneath them and the sky is falling. In the wake of this, my created world bands together to come up with coping plans. This lets me explore ideas of anxiety and vulnerability, community, and the illusions of safety. I’m fascinated by the resilience of life. Every disaster is followed by rebirth, where we try to cobble together a plan b. out of what remains. My paintings celebrate this fascination and my love of the urban landscape and its creatures.

Visit Amy Casey's site to see the rest of this collection, and other great pieces.

Milton Glaser Draws & Lectures

I thought I would start of my blog by posting this very interesting video of one of my favorite designers, Milton Glaser. In this short film, he lectures about the importance of drawing, while simultaneously drawing a portrait of Shakespeare. For those of you who’ve never heard of Milton Glaser, he is one of most influential designers of the past half-century. Milton Glaser is mostly known for designing the “I (heart) NY” logo.

The book he mentions in the video, Drawing is Thinking, is already available for purchase. It definitely seems like an interesting read.
